The Legal English Academy – Diploma in Legal English demonstrates an advanced level of command of English specifically for legal contexts, valuable for lawyers, law students, and other legal professionals. This Diploma certificate can show employers and educational institutions your higher level of proficiency in the specialised vocabulary and grammar needed for legal writing and presentations.
The course has been developed to enable lawyers develop their ability to use English for professional purposes and to be able to analysis and produce authentic legal documents.
What are the aims of the course?
- To Improve your ability to write legal documents, such as letters, memoranda, plaints, affidavits etc.
- To introduce you to language-related aspects of various branches of law, such as: company law, contract law, law of delict etc.
- To enable you gain confidence in speaking and making presentation in various professional settings.

Spoken English for Lawyers and Law Students
Our Spoken English for Lawyers and Law Students programme is a 30-day programme which will help lawyers, law students and those involved with legal matters to master the formal legal language, precise vocabulary, and professional communication skills specific to legal settings. The course includes understanding the nuances of legal terminology, adapting communication styles for different audiences (like clients, judges, and colleagues), and developing clear, confident delivery.
The course is on-site and online.

INTRODUCTION
The English for law students and lawyers course is aimed at law students, legal professionals and other persons who regularly deal with legal documents written in English, and communicate orally on legal matters. It constitutes of a classroom taught component and easy to understand self-study resource component. The Course will help you both understand English legal language as it appears in contemporary written and spoken contexts, and to use clear, accurate English in everyday legal and business situations. It consists of six units.
UNIT 1
The first unit focuses on key elements of legal English writing. The use of Artificial
Intelligence tools is also discussed.
UNIT 2
The second unit takes you a step further and develops your language skills with emphasis on proper punctuation and writing style.
UNIT 3
The third unit consists of practical usage of the legal language and covers drafting legal documents to achieve maximum effectiveness in different situations.
UNIT 4
The fourth unit covers various aspects of the language with focus on specific areas of various branches of law. Such as, the law of contracts, delict, property law, etc.
UNIT 5
The fifth unit focuses on spoken English. Such as, usage at meeting, negotiation and making presentations.
UNIT 6
This unit is on advocacy. Preparing the client for trial, negotiation of fees, making
presentations and telephone etiquette are the main focus of learning in this unit.
Throughout the course, self-study exercises, ranging from short gap-filling exercises to more involved comprehension exercises are provided. Participant requirements
Participants should have a basic knowledge of the English language.
Learning Approaches
- Students could participate in any Course Unit of choice without having to follow them in Unit order.
- Students are required to participate in a three-hour classroom learning activity where the salient points of the Course Unit are taught.
- Self-study exercises are provided. Students are encouraged to complete the exercises and submit via WhatsApp for correction.
- A certificate of participation will be issued on completion of all Course Units.
